Although this is a very old book and the font is hard to read, remarkably Google&#8217;s book scanning project not only had scanned this obscure book, it also performed good enough OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to index the name of my relative.<\/p>\n<p>From here it was a case of reading and re-reading the genealogical relationship in the book to determine how exactly the Rev fitted in to our own history.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wickham.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/William-Provis-Wickham.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1661\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wickham.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/William-Provis-Wickham.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"852\" height=\"619\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wickham.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/William-Provis-Wickham.png 852w, https:\/\/www.wickham.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/William-Provis-Wickham-300x218.png 300w, https:\/\/www.wickham.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/William-Provis-Wickham-768x558.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He was a vicar at Shepton Mallet, and lived in a rather nice house called Charlton House (<a class=\"moz-txt-link-freetext\" href=\"https:\/\/houseandheritage.org\/2016\/07\/16\/charlton-house\/\">https:\/\/houseandheritage.org\/2016\/07\/16\/charlton-house\/<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>His son was called\u00a0 Reverend William Provis Trelawney Wickham M.A. , also vicar of Shepton Mallet, gave his name to these Almshouses there:<br \/>\n<a class=\"moz-txt-link-freetext\" href=\"https:\/\/alms1627.org.uk\/history\/wickham-almshouses\/\">https:\/\/alms1627.org.uk\/history\/wickham-almshouses\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I found later he&#8217;s also mentioned in the &#8220;The Gentleman&#8217;s Magazine&#8221; of 1843 in the &#8220;Clergy, Deceased&#8221; category.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-1656 gallery-columns-3 gallery-size-thumbnail'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon portrait'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/www.wickham.uk\/blog\/2022\/12\/digging-up-the-past\/gm-2\/'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wickham.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/gm-2-150x150.png\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon portrait'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/www.wickham.uk\/blog\/2022\/12\/digging-up-the-past\/screenshot_2\/'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wickham.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Screenshot_2-150x150.png\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>The name of this honoured gentleman was very familiar to me, as to my sisters as my father had his portrait up in our sitting room for as long as I remember.
