{"id":1019,"date":"2014-09-26T16:48:10","date_gmt":"2014-09-26T15:48:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wickham.uk\/blog\/?p=1019"},"modified":"2014-09-26T16:48:10","modified_gmt":"2014-09-26T15:48:10","slug":"sam-sam-pick-up-tha-musket","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wickham.uk\/blog\/2014\/09\/sam-sam-pick-up-tha-musket\/","title":{"rendered":"Sam, Sam, Pick Up Tha Musket"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Don&#8217;t think I&#8217;ve heard this since I were a schoolboy.<\/p>\n<p>If you are able, it is probably best read in a northern accent:<\/p>\n<h2>Sam, Sam, Pick Up Tha Musket<\/h2>\n<p>It occurred on the evening before Waterloo,<br \/>\nAs troops were lined up on parade.<br \/>\nAnd sergeant inspecting &#8217;em, he were a terror,<br \/>\nOf whom every man were afraid.<\/p>\n<p>All excepting one man, he were in&#8217;t front rank,<br \/>\nA man by t&#8217;name of Sam Small.<br \/>\nAnd he and t&#8217;sergeant were both daggers drawn,<br \/>\nThey thought nowt of each other at all.<\/p>\n<p>As sergeant walked past he was swinging his arms,<br \/>\nAnd he happened to brush against Sam.<br \/>\nAnd knocking t&#8217;musket clean out of &#8216;is hand,<br \/>\nIt fell t&#8217;ground wi&#8217; a slam.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Pick it up!&#8217; said sergeant, abrupt like, but cool.<br \/>\nBut Sam wi&#8217; a shake of &#8216;is &#8216;ead.<br \/>\nSaid &#8216;Seeing as tha knocked it out of my hand,<br \/>\nP&#8217;rhaps tha&#8217;ll pick t&#8217; thing up instead.<\/p>\n<p>Sam, Sam, pick up tha musket!<br \/>\nThe sergeant exclaimed with a roar.<br \/>\nSam said tha&#8217; knocked it down reasonin&#8217;<br \/>\nTha&#8217;ll pick it up, or it stays, where t&#8217;is on the floor.<\/p>\n<p>The sound of high words very soon reached<br \/>\nThe ears of an officer, Lieutenant Bird.<br \/>\nWho says to the sergeant &#8216;Now what&#8217;s all this &#8216;ere?&#8217;,<br \/>\nAnd the sergeant told what had occurred.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Sam, Sam, pick up thy musket !&#8217;,<br \/>\nLieutenant exclaimed with some heat.<br \/>\nSam says he knocked it down, reasonin he picks it up,<br \/>\nOr it stays where&#8217;t is at my feet.<\/p>\n<p>It caused quite a stir when the Captain arrived,<br \/>\nTo find out the cause of the trouble,<br \/>\nAnd every man there all, excepting old Sam,<br \/>\nWas full of excitement and bubble.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Sam, Sam, pick up thy musket!&#8217;,<br \/>\nSaid Captain, for strictness renowned.<br \/>\nSam says he knocked it down, reasonin he picks it up,<br \/>\nOr it stays where&#8217;t is on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>The same thing occurred when the Major and Colonel<br \/>\nBoth tried to get Sam to see sense.<br \/>\nBut when old Duke of Wellington came into view,<br \/>\nWell then the excitement was tense.<\/p>\n<p>Up rode the Duke on a lovely white horse<br \/>\nTo &#8216;Find out the cause of the bother.&#8217;<br \/>\nHe looked at the musket, and then at old Sam,<br \/>\nAnd he talked to old Sam like a brother.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Sam, Sam, pick up thy musket&#8217;, the Duke<br \/>\nSaid as quiet as could be,<br \/>\n&#8216;Sam, Sam-Sam-Sam, pick up thy musket.&#8217;,<br \/>\nCome on lad just to please me.<\/p>\n<p>All right Duke says old Sam just for thee I&#8217;ll oblige,<br \/>\nAnd to show thee I meant no offence.<br \/>\nSo Sam picked it up. &#8216;Gradely lad.&#8217; said the Duke.<br \/>\n&#8216;Righto boys let battle commence.&#8217;<\/p>\n<address>\u00a0<\/address>\n<address>The poem is, in fact, a traditional folk song which was written in 1929 and made famous by the actor Stanley Holloway [1890-1982] It is about the period before the Duke of Wellington&#8217;s famous battle at Waterloo against Napoleon in 1815.<\/address>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Don&#8217;t think I&#8217;ve heard this since I were a schoolboy.
